There’s an old Jamaican proverb parents have shared with their children for generations…

“Sorry fi mawga dawg, mawga dawg tun round bite yuh.”

“You would do your best for someone and in return they repay you with evil,” explains five-time JUNO Award winner Exco Levi. “Unfortunately that proverb fable is as relevant today as it was hundreds of years ago. It’s true in all cultures.

“Implications that ensue can be serious,” he continues, in a pensive mood. “The good guy in this case loses his job. Reminder of the past that is alive in the present.”

As track nine on Exco’s most recent release, NARRATIVE, “Maga Dawg” further fuels the Jamaican-Canadian reggae maestro’s riveting storytelling as song. Having written more than 150 songs across the expanse of his career, NARRATIVE comes on the heels of 2015’s wildly successful and well received Country Man.

Every human has a life story, with every stage a chapter. Multi-JUNO award winner Exco Levi is adding a new one to his book with the upcoming sophomore release, NARRATIVE — a full-length 13-track journey into the reggae master’s uniquely vivid storytelling capability and richly defining point of view.

“My music is touching on many sub-topics,” reflects Brampton-based Exco Levi on the creation of NARRATIVE and its wide-reaching relatability. “Real issues that are going on… This is what the album is about. That’s why I named it NARRATIVE, because it’s telling different stories. It’s a part of me that I present to the world!”

Having written more than 150 songs across the expanse of his career, NARRATIVE comes on the heels of 2015’s wildly successful and well received Country Man. The Jamaican-Canadian has won five Best Reggae Recording JUNO Awards, including 2017 for “SIREN”, earning him noteworthiness as the “best winning percentage” in the history of the JUNO Awards. Compared to Anne Murray (52 nominations : 24 wins) and Celine Dion (72 nominations : 20 wins), Exco Levi has won as many of the coveted Canadian awards as David Foster, Liona Boyd, and Glass Tiger, and more than Joni Mitchell, Kari, Deadmau5, and the Arkells.

Teaming up again with German top-producers Silly Walks Discotheque, Exco Levi’s production team shared more on the 13 “chapters” that make up NARRATIVE:

“After unforgettable hits like “Jah Nah Sleep” and “Storms Of Life”, Exco Levi has teamed up again with German top-producers Silly Walks Discotheque, warrantors of fine music destined for high rotation. In an intense collaboration with Austria’s Irievibrations Records as well as Josi Coppola and the Evolution Band, they brought existing riddims to renewed glory and created new, fascinating tracks from scratch. Thus, the hot-off-the-press “Don’t Cry”, a catchy love song for all the beautiful ladies around the world, is sure to hit the airwaves with a massive impact, while “Money Can’t Save You” promises a reunion with our old friend, the Drop Leaf riddim.

Other big names that add substantially to the album are Penthouse, who produced “Trouble”, and Raging Fyah, who lent their signature sound to the final track “Redo”. None other than the great Sizzla Kalonji joins outspoken Levi in “Burn”, an anthem celebrating Rasta Livity and Repatriation. Add to this the touching ballad “Part Of Me”, an ode to Exco’s mother, and uplifting tracks like “My Moment” or “Feel Like Dancing” and you get a perfectly balanced release that will accompany you for many years to come.”

Mixed by Syrix (Irievibrations) and mastered by Stefan Flad (Red Kitchen), NARRATIVE is going to bring you 13 authentic songs in brilliant sound quality – turn up those speakers!”
