Prime Minister Andrew Holness has extended sincere sympathies on behalf of the Government and people of Jamaica to the Government and people of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan following the loss of lives due to the ongoing monsoon rains and flooding.

The Republic of Pakistan has been heavily impacted, with major displacement of people and damage to infrastructure across the entire country occasioned by the ongoing monsoon rains and attendant flooding since June. Hundreds of children are among over 1000 people killed.

Prime Minister Holness said:

“Jamaica is saddened to hear of the very unfortunate humanitarian situation being faced by Pakistan even as the monsoon rains, which started in June, continue. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the bereaved.”

In the meantime, Prime Minister Holness also highlighted the potentially crippling effects of naturally occurring disasters and noted that they are a stark and constant reminder of the vulnerabilities in this region and across the world. He is therefore encouraging even greater global attention to the matter.

In a diplomatic note today (August 30) to the Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Prime Minister Holness said Jamaica remains hopeful, that the natural resilience and tenacity of Pakistan and its people will serve to lead to recovery from this ongoing disastrous event.

Finally, in his note, the Prime Minister said;

“Please accept, our best wishes and the assurance of Jamaica’s support to the Government and people of Pakistan at this difficult time.”
